CRI offers a course on Crime Prevention / Reduction and Community Engagement for patrol officers, detectives, and supervisors. (16-hours TCOLE)
Community Engagement is a word thrown around in police circles and has become a catchphrase
used to convince the public we, as a police department, are engaging them. What does community
engagement mean, and how does a patrol officer, detective, or supervisor incorporate it into their
daily routine?
This 16-hour course teaches officers how to incorporate being a warrior and guardian with a
servant's heart whose goal is to bring life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to the community.
The student will learn how to engage the public effectively, enhancing their response to calls for
service. They will understand the importance of activity programs and events like coffee with a
cop making them a part of their patrol routines. Students will learn basic physical security
concepts, which they can use to assist homeowners and business owners on different kinds of
calls for service.
The student will also learn the basics of crime, crime movements, crime concentration, and how
to carry out effectively directed patrols in hot spots, which will reduce crime and call load. These
concepts are underscored by a methodology built around harm-focused policing that is
intelligence-led, problem-oriented, and evidence-based.
